Caricature of me for once!

Here’s some of my caricatures from a surprise 60th birthday party I was entertaining at in Sligo. I was the aperitif before the guests sat down to dinner!
The Forbidden Planet Blog reports that Gerald Scarfe has been awarded a CBE. Scarfe is probably one of my biggest influences, even if my style is nothing like his. I remember seeing one of his cartoons of Nixon wiping his arse with the Stars and Stripes when I was about 15 and being absolutely stunned by how perfectly he’d distilled his disgust into cartoon that surely harmed Nixon’s image in the public eye. Scarfe remains one of the greatest caricaturists in the world.

Last weekend I brought my wedding entertainment to Adare, Co. Limerick for a drinks reception.
Or at least I tried to.
The drive from Galway to Limerick is at most an hour and a half since the Ennis bypass opened. I was due to start drawing at 4pm in the Woodlands Hotel. At 3.30 I still hadn’t reached Gort. It took me 40 minutes to get from Oranmore to Clarinbridge, a distance of 6 kilometres. I ended up ringing the hotel and offering to do the after dinner stint instead. I turned around and was back in Galway in 30 minutes. This despite the fact I had pretty much chewed my steering wheel off in frustration!
Well I made good time when I made my second attempt to reach the hotel, and the couple were lovely, and very understanding about the traffic situation and I’d a great night with the guests.
No matter how much planning you do though, sometimes the traffic gods just decide you’re not going to get there on time.

This is a mate of mine who turned 30 yesterday. He had one of the best reactions I’ve ever seen: he smiled, then giggled, then said thanks, then giggled again, then laughed and laughed at it for ages.
I remember 30 as if it were only 3 years ago.
