Star Trek Cartoon Parody: Stellar Excursion by Allan Cavanagh

Star Trek Cartoon Parody: anyone who knows me knows too my abiding love of Star Trek: The Next Generation. It’s the greatest TV show of all time in my humble opinion (but for me it is not the best Star Trek show, that was Deep Space Nine, make of that what you will.) I adored The Original Series as a little child watching on BBC2 in the late 70s/early 80s, even if it scared substances out of me that looked like they wanted to kill Tasha Yar. When the Next Gen started my family was consistently late for evening mass on a Saturday as I had to be dragged from the sitting room, much like Tasha Yar being dragged by that creature that resembled… well you remember.

Of course the first couple of series were ropey but when it hit its stride (Rikers’ Beard) my god it became like a second home and made me so, so happy. It was vast and fun and dramatic and very, very horny. An abiding part of the show that resonates now was that characters made art, wrote poetry, performed in plays, and played music, all just for its own sake, the enjoyment of creativity. Is that something that’s even depicted any more? Formative stuff indeed. Favourite episode? Time’s Arrow (ok that’s two episodes.) When I got my first 5.1 surround sound system I set it up so the telly would come through it for watching TNG: the hum of the engines would come through the subwoofer, you could feel it, it was like being on board. I know I know, NEEEEERRRRD.
Anyway I spent waaaay too long on this silly Star Trek comic strip but I’m quite happy with how it turned out, there’s a couple of easter eggs in there too, I hope you enjoy it dear reader! (Younger visitors and those who weren’t as glued to The Next Generation may want to scroll to the end for an explanation if they don’t get it!)

A 6 panel cartoon titled STELLAR EXCURSION by Allan Cavanagh in font and styling similar to Star Trek: The Next Generation. Frame 1 shows Picard and Riker on a planet. Picard says “transporter room, two to beam up.” Frame 2 shows Miles O’Brien at the transporter desk. He says “sorry Captain the bleedin yoke’s feckin banjaxed.” Frame 3 shows Picard pulling his jumper down over his knees. He says “oh for goodness sake- engaging Picard Manoeuvre”. Riker is kicking his leg in the air at the same time and says “engaging Riker Manoeuvre”. Frame 4 shows Picard launching straight into the air from the force of his recoiling jumper. Rikers legs have immensely stretched, one going straight up and one in contact with the ground, while his body is moving out of frame. Frames 5 and 6 show the Enterprise bridge. Dr. Krusher, Worf, LaForge, Troi and Data are at their posts. Riker and Picard appear, Riker’s leg stretching to the bridge floor and Picard falling with his arms above his head. In Frame 6 Picard and Riker are sitting in their chairs. Data stares out of frame. Dr. Krusher can be seen holding a familiar candle. LaForge and Worf high-five. At the very bottom of the frame, in very faint text, it says DIN, DIN DIN DIN, DIN DIN DIIIIIN.
