A Few Words of Cant, the Language of Irish Travellers

It’s Traveller Pride Week and no better time to share this lovely cartoon-based poster with a few words of the Traveller language, Cant. The poster was produced by Involve, who’s mission “(In Partnership with Travellers) recognises the equality of the Traveller Community by providing programmes, initiatives and services that promote the participation and inclusion of the Traveller Community in Irish Society.”

You can’t have spent any time in Galway without having at least heard a few words along the way (beoir and feen in particular!). The idea of the poster was “to have something symbolic in youth clubs and wherever else that would give young Travellers an extra sense of belonging. Our primary work is that of youth work for young Travellers but we have many strings to our bow. We also create the Travellers’ Voice Magazine and are currently developing a Traveller Culture and Identity programme which has had a number of successful pilots.”

A list of Irish Traveller organisations.
