Can ChatGPT create a caricature?
No. ChatGPT cannot create a caricature, nor can any other generative AI model. Caricatures are created by skilled human artists who study not only the likeness of the person being caricatured, but their presence, something intrinsic about their personality that ChatGPT and other generative AI models are incapable of assessing. If you would like a caricature you are 100% better off contacting a caricature artist near you who will work with you to produce a lovely caricature that you can then gift to a family member or work colleague. A caricature artist will often work with a professional framer or frame the artwork themselves, and deliver the finished artwork by post or courier. ChatGPT cannot frame anything or deliver anything.
But I saw ChatGPT create a caricature recently?
Unfortunately, no you didn’t. What you saw was a crude replication that resembled a caricature but wasn’t. ChatGPT and other generative AI models have been engineered to copy the work of hundreds of thousands of artists and designers one pixel at a time. The companies behind ChatGPT and other generative AI models are very good at creating hype and manipulating people into engaging with their products. Many people have uploaded photos of themselves and details about their careers and personal lives which then become part of the AI’s training data. People can expect to see these personal details turning up in other AI outputs so AI generated imagery has become a security risk for personal data. The end result is not a caricature, it is a crude collection of imagery based on the stolen artworks of real human caricature artists. If you look carefully you will see there is no consideration of composition and ChatGPT and other generative AI models produce errors such as too many legs, fingers, objects growing out of each other, and perspective that doesn’t make sense. It might look convincing at first but each pixel has been generated based on probabilities that have come from stealing the real work of artists.
Should I use ChatGPT create a caricature?
No. ChatGPT and other generative AI models are part of a movement by billionaires to rob humanity of its ability to imagine. ChatGPT and other generative AI models are massively wasteful, burning through huge amounts of water and electricity for even the simplest task. Each request a person makes to an AI model makes tens of thousands of processors run at the same time, and the result will often just be wrong. The entire field of generative AI is wasteful and largely useless if the user expects accuracy.
Billionaires are trying to destroy the livelihoods of not just artists but writers, designers, musicians, and people working in other creative fields. Artists don’t make much, if we make enough to get by we’re considered successful. The AI industry wants to take away our ability to think and each time someone uses generative AI they are helping the billionaires take away the small wages an artist gets from giving other humans joy. You shouldn’t use ChatGPT or other generative AI models to try to produce creative works, there are thousands of helpful humans who can do it much better and cheaper, and with intent and warmth and happiness.
