Wedding Markree Castle: Earlier this month I was back in the 17th Century splendour of the Markree Castle, (Markree Demesne, Collooney, Co. Sligo, F91 AE81, phone 071 916 7800). I’m usually up there once or twice a year, and there’s just something magical about the countryside around Markree and Castle Dargan, both favourite venues of mine to work in! Markree lost some Great Old Trees during the recent storm, it was such a shame seeing these 12 foot wide root bases broken and exposed leaving craters in the ground. I’ve had a few weddings over January and February and driving around the country I’ve seen so many ancient trees upended, but Markree had some impressive sylvan giants in particular. Hopefully they’ll be taking to a bout of replanting in the next while. Markree Castle is such a colourful venue as well you can’t help but get really vivid photos, and you can see a gallery of Markree Castle pictures of my caricatures and guests by clicking here.

As usual I set up by the back window in The Library with my easel and lights and then await the arrival of the wedding guests. The wedding itself was in Markree Castle as well, so it was a quick climb up the stairs after the ceremony was over and I had my first sitters straight away! I often get quite an audience when drawing and the way the seating is arranged in the library room I was surrounded by guests so every time I did my big reveal I got a huge laugh and quite a few rounds of applause from the other guests! Great craic altogether!
