Comic Lab is an indispensable podcast I came across last year about the art and business of making comics presented by Dave Kellet and Brad Guigar. It’s a regular dive into listeners’ questions about the world of comic strips in today’s online, post-print environment, and they range from beginner’s tips to professional deep-dives, from the practice of drawing and writing to how to build a (paying!) audience.
They’ve recently started a YouTube channel called The Wrong Way, where alongside fellow cartoonist Kevin McShane, they take a extremely copyrighted character with powerful IP lawyers, and deliberately draw them wrong based on the prompt of the character’s name. In the above video the three have a go at S*******b S*********s with… mixed results and a lot of slagging each other off. It’s a lot of fun!
Join veteran cartoonists Dave Kellett (Drive, Sheldon), Kevin McShane (Draw-Off, Kevin Comics), and Brad Guigar (Evil Inc., The Webcomics Handbook) as they show you how to draw SpongeBob SquarePants without getting sued. It’s The Wrong Way!
While drawing Spongebob, the fellas discuss:
What Kevin knows about SpongeBob, despite never having seen the show
Which SpongeBob characters Dave knows
Dave’s color-blindness and love for Vans shoesAfter finishing, the fellas reveal their drawings to each other… and roast each other mercilessly.
