Ffffound closes down.
I suppose the day had to come that Ffffound closes down. This invite-only design site had been around since 2007 but its simplicity, lack of pleading clickbait headlines, and the death of Google Reader, probably meant there wasn’t a niche for it any more. The content varied wildly and at times it was page after page of hardcore pornography (Safe For Work in some offices obviously) but it was a fantastic resource of design imagination. There was a lot of graphic design in it, from magazine covers to club night flyer designs to raw colour experiments like the below. You’d also get posts like the above exquisitely tiny portrait of Barack Obama.

All that’s on the homepage now, or any of the many posts I’d bookmarked, is the clever logo and the dates of operation. In time they too will disappear I’m sure. I used to scroll gigabytes of posts in the days of Google Reader (at one time I was pulling in upwards of 150 sites via their RSS feeds in the heady days of blogging for your supper). Perhaps the contributions of members had fallen off over time too. Social media probably killed more traffic than it generated and it put the controlling share of the internet into just a few hands. The endgame of Facebook and Google is to have you never leave their confines, increasingly serving up third party information in such a way that you never need click the source. A site like Fffffound was never going to sink all its energy into the confines of a Facebook page. I can find very little online about why it closed so this is all speculation. I did come across a tumblr that seems to archive much of it (bear in mind the NSFW warning earlier) and there’s also quite a bit on Pinterest labelled Ffffound.
Shame to see it go but there’s a lot of the mainstays of the internet ecosystem gone by the wayside now. All those bookmarks will be lost in time, like tears in rain.
BRB got to like some fake news on Facebook.
