The Office Caricatures for #NationalDrawingDay

The Office Caricatures: this is a series of quick caricatures based on characters from the office I drew live on Facebook for National Drawing Day 2020, an initiative of the National Gallery of Ireland. They went down very well and I got hundreds of views while I was doing it so this is something I intend to visit again. Perhaps I’ll do the whole set!

I came to the US Office very late, having basically binge-watched it earlier this year (the whole thing is on Amazon Prime), and I realise how much I missed out on the first time! It’s got a lot of heart and warmth and doesn’t trade on the outright cringe humour of its British predecessor. It’s quite a different show, but you can see in the first series they were trying for a straight-up American remake of the British formula. By series two it’s completely retooled and some of the characters look and act different, in particular Michael Scott. It then had the creative space (as well as quite a bit more time) to grow into something quite different to its UK counterpart.

There’s quite a few omissions from the principal cast below but I was drawing quickly and in no particular order. As I say I may revisit the office and draw the entire cast. Clockwise from top left we have Jim Halbert, Michael Scott, Dwight Schrute, Phyllis Vance, Angela Martin, Stanley Hudson and Meredith Palmer. I spent just a few minutes on each using pencil and Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pen brush, and Faber-Castell Pitt Pen big brush.
