Friday Cartoon: The Irish Housing Crisis

Irish Housing Crisis Cartoon: another cartoon from the round-up of 2024 commissioned by Simon McGarr over at The Gist. This one looks at the Irish housing crisis through the lens of a group of children playing “house” based on things they might have heard on the news such as vulture funds, eviction bans, and how our precious precious landlords must be protected. I hope these kids understand they’re going to be living with their parents until they’re in their thirties because successive FG/FF/Green/Others governments have deemed housing a privilege to be monopolised by multinational companies charging extortionate rents, rather than a basic right of the people of Ireland to shelter and privacy. When I was in my 20s it was so easy and relatively cheap to get a place. I tell my older kids this and they think it’s a fairy tale. Won’t somebody think of the profits! Plus ça change! (And let’s not forget how the people of Donegal have been completely shafted by the State when it comes to compensation for their Mica homes crumbling like cereal bars.)

UPDATE: I wrote this post before Micheál Martin found the Irish housing crisis sooooo hilarious when licking Trump’s orange fundament-

Extract from The Gist:

Housing is a difficult, society-wide problem. Which was why it was so surprising that Paschal Donoghoe so easily alienated voters when responding to a homeless woman on live TV during the election: “I know it’s a very complex argument to make regarding why I’m saying there should not be a complete ban on evictions. The reason for that is that I want more landlords. I want more private landlords”.

Irish Housing Crisis Cartoon

Irish Housing Crisis Cartoon: a group of children playing in this black and white cartoon, reproducing soundbites about the Irish Housing Crisis by pretending to be landlords, tenants, reporters. One child is dressed as a vulture and shouts "I'm a vulture fund"! The parents look on from the door and say "Aw, they're playing house!"
