I Am Not A Cat is 5 years old
February saw the 5th anniversary of the notorious Zoom hearing where one lawyer let his inner fursona out and couldn’t turn it off again. (IANAL is internet for I am not a lawyer!)
Amazing Screw On Head
This amazing animated short came up in my recommendations recently. The Amazing Screw-On Head was a comic book written and drawn by Mike Mignola and published by Dark Horse Comics in 2002, starring the character of the same name. This animated pilot came out in 2006 but wasn’t picked up. If you like Hellboy you’ll love this.
Amano’s Irish/Singing Course
I came to Amano‘s course with practically no Irish and definitely no singing background, simply a curiosity about learning some Irish and using another medium to do that, in this case Irish songs. Amano’s course was so well structured, with recordings, lyrics, translations and other materials arriving ahead of the class for each song. I found the class quite meditative and took a real feeling of contentment and wonder away each week. I’m so happy I got to do this and fully intend to sign up again. I have found myself singing! Just a wonderful experience. Highly recommended.
A Good Use of GDPR
I used to use Photobucket to host images. They put up a paywall, so I lost access to images. I got an email from them offering me access again for a fiver a month. I sent them a GDPR request under Article 15. I got all my lost images for free in one handy folder.
Is Leap Year?
I saw my usual February spike in traffic for my famous Leap Year review. I should register isthisaleapyear dot com. That’s what they’re trying to find out!
The Generative Elephant in the Room
I’m sure you’re curious about my feelings about a certain recent trend. I was going to go into it but I’m kind of tired of the whole thing. Short version is I knew this was coming because about 20 different US news outlets published the exact same article around the same time on it, so basically they all published the same press release from that company. I also saw a spike in search traffic shortly afterwards. The “trend” was completely engineered, as these things usually are. You can only spend so much time telling people that generative AI is based on my stolen work, and the work of 1000s of caricature artists worldwide, and what you get in return is a) horrible and b) has used an appalling amount of energy and water in a data centre the size of Manhattan. Oh and congratulations, your photo and details are now part of the training data.
