Galway Cartoon Festival 21-30 October 2017

Galway Cartoon Festival
Galway Cartoon Festival: a new entry into Galway’s crowded calendar of fun, the Cartoon Festival is an event to celebrate drawings that make us laugh and make us think. Its stated purpose is to bring great cartooning from around the world for people here to appreciate and enjoy. Cartoon is the one major artform that we don’t celebrate in Galway and it’s high time for that to change.

The core of the festival will be two exhibitions of drawings by some of the leading practitioners in Ireland, Europe and the USA. Names include Martyn Turner of the Irish Times, Martin Rowson of the Guardian, the inimitable Tom Mathews, Graeme Keyes of The Phoenix, Tom Tomorrow of the American underground, and local cartoonists Allan Cavanagh and Richard Chapman (Sergei). Cyprus, Latvia, Turkey, Portugal, Slovakia, Belgium, Germany and Malta will be among the many other countries represented.

In order to squeeze into the busy schedule of culture the festival runs at the same time as the Galway Comedy Carnival and shares a venue in the Town Hall Theatre, so why not catch a cartoon exhibition and stand-up comedian on the same night?

As well as exhibitions, the Galway Cartoon Festival is planning workshops, discussions and other events concerning aspects of the cartoon arts. These will be held at the Black Gate Cultural Centre (and Wine Bar) on Frances Street.

Main sponsor of the Festival – and key location for cartoon blather – is Tigh Neachtain, arguably Galway’s most cartoon-like pub. If members of the public find any lost cartoonists they are asked to return them here.

The Town Hall Theatre exhibition opens on Saturday October 21 at 3.30pm. The Black Gate exhibition opens on Tuesday October 24 at 6.00pm. Both run until October 30.

Wedding Reception Entertainment in the Hotel Meyrick Galway!

Wedding Reception Entertainment Ireland: Some of my on-the-spot art creation wedding reception entertainment at a wedding in the Hotel Meyrick Galway. A really lovely wedding this, in the welcoming environs of the Hotel Meyrick Galway. I’m always very well looked after by Paula and the team in this centrally-located Galway hotel that’s as much a part of the fabric of the city as Eyre Square itself, The Long Walk, or the Claddagh. I always look forward to entertaining the wedding guests in this lovely location and any couples I’ve worked with have been thrilled with their wedding receptions there.

For my live wedding reception entertainment, I set up my easel somewhere central during your drinks reception, usually near the prosecco! I take up about 2 metres squared so I’m not too obtrusive even if it’s a big wedding! Once the guests arrive I introduce myself and encourage my first sitters. This usually results in quite a crowd forming to watch the creation of my live wedding caricatures and I have my next volunteers immediately!

That’s me then until the bell goes for the call to dinner, producing a drawing every 3-4 minutes until it’s time to be seated for the meal. This is usually when the couple themselves get to sit with me for a minute and get their breath back before the next stage of the day begins for them!

The A3 paper is printed with the couple’s names and the date of the wedding so they are an excellent memento of the big day. Live caricatures are an excellent form of entertainment for your guests during your drinks reception. They are a great ice-breaker as guests gather around and start chatting and laughing at my drawings! I’m available as Wedding Reception Entertainment Ireland nationwide.

You can see my extensive archive of live wedding caricatures here.

I also have a range of wedding guest signing boards, a bespoke alternative to the traditional guestbook, here.
