Love this yarn from legendary cartoonist Daryl Cagle (who I got to hang out with in Algeria many moons ago) from his days as a 25-year-old Muppets merchandise artist:

The Muppets had taken over a large part of the Macy’s Herald Square department store with Muppet licensed merchandise and they did a promotion where I would sit in the middle of the Muppet products and draw Muppets at the request of customers. I hadn’t done anything like this before, but it sounded like it would be fun…

Wedding Caricatures, Killaloe Hotel – Irish Independent

monopoly theme wedding invitation

I just came across this feature in the Irish Independent from 2017, when I entertained at the wedding of Aideen & Jonny in the Killaloe Hotel. I get a good mention so of course I had to share! Everything was outdoors and we had a harbour view on this incredibly sunny day in Killaloe. I also managed to see the nesting sea eagles near there that weekend so I’d a great time all in all! If you’re interested in having your wedding invitations feature one of my caricatures or you’d like to have me draw caricatures live during your wedding reception, drop me a line!

They had a graphic designer design the selection of cards using a caricature of themselves drawn up by Allan Cavanagh. Allan was also on hand to create caricatures of guests at the drinks reception on the day, which Aideen says was a big hit with all the guests.

On A Bicycle Made for Two!

tandem wedding bicycle made for two wedding gift

This tandem bike wedding caricature gift was a lot of fun to draw. It’s absolutely stuffed with references from the newlywed couple’s lives, from charity work to Game of Thrones (you can see the Night King running off in the distance!) Other important elements were their love of GAA, music, tea and scones, and there’s some snowboarding going to happen too. In the background there’s a cheetah and rhino looking on. Of course Dublin and Meath are famous for their cheetahs and rhinos. 🙂

They are available for delivery all over Ireland and Northern Ireland, and I can ship to the UK too.

The process is very simple, you send me a description of what you’d like included in your bespoke caricature gift, along with recent head and shoulder photos, and I do the rest. You can include hobbies, work references, favourite football, rugby, GAA or other teams, and even pets! I’ve drawn many dogs and cats over the years! All frames are hand made by Mark in the Framing Loft Galway, and securely packaged and shipped by courier by Carabay Packaging in Galway. Once the artwork is shipped you’ll receive a tracking number so you can see your caricature art gift making its way to you! For a unique wedding gift that will be truly treasured by your newlywed friends, order a bespoke caricature from one of Ireland’s top caricature artists, Allan Cavanagh!

Facebook 3D images without iPhone

700sun depth

This is very cool. You can now create 3D images on Facebook via browser.

Previously Facebook 3D images could be done with iPhone cameras that had portrait mode but now you can upload them yourself using your browser facebook application.

You just need to create a depth map of the image you want to 3D-ify. I tried it out using my clocks going forward cartoon.
clocks go forward ireland
You simply build up areas of your image in shades of grey, the darker the area, the “further back” it will be in the final image. The writing in white will appear in the “foreground”.
700sun depth
I just built this up in layers and flattened it at the end. You save both as png or jpeg (I used png here) and save both with the same file name, except you amend “_depth” to the name of your depth image. For example
sun.png
sun_depth.png
The underscore is important here.
Then you upload both as a status on Facebook in your browser, and Facebook automatically combines them!

Very cool! (The embed might not work on every browser but if you’re reading on a desktop computer you should see the effect.)

I’d seen these pop on Facebook and I thought there was third party software involved where you define planes using polygons and layers and the program extrapolates data from each layer to fill in the detail “behind” the foreground subject but it’s actually a much simpler process! Was fun figuring out how grey something should be for its “distance”. If you look at the treees in the midground you can see I even gave the ones in the background slightly more depth than the trees in the foreground. I’m not sure of the applications for this other than a cool thing to try but sometimes that’s enough!
