Caricature of a Dairy Consultant!
One of the coolest things about my job is learning about technical stuff from other occupations. Case in point: in this personalised caricature of a dairy consultant I had to draw a plate meter (the thing he’s holding in his left hand). I’d never heard of a plate meter so I was very curious about what it is and what it’s for! Turns out it’s a device for measuring grass height! It also never occurred to me that grass needed to be measured, and if someone had asked me to do it I’d have gotten on my hands and knees with a ruler and a comb. The customer gave me some details:
“The plate meter has a suspended plate that measures grass height. It converts this height into Kg of dry matter grass per hectare. The aim is to graze the grass at the correct stage. Too high and quality reduces. Too low and growth rates reduce.” I learned something about dairy farming!
The subject here is an agriculture dairy consultant who was returning home to New Zealand (what a good place to be”) after working in Ireland for years. He’s pictured in his work shirt with his company logo on it. He’s got his bag packed for his return trip and it contains a bottle of glenlivit 18 whiskey, running shoes, and a sticker for the Kerry Way Ultra run, a 200km run that happens around the Ring of Kerry! Also pictured are a particular breed of cow and a bag of fertiliser with some Post-It notes! In this instance I even had to get a particular type of grass for the field the subject is standing in, called multi-species. I learned something else! In the background are 26 mountain peaks representing another run the subject did across the 26 highest peaks in Wicklow.
“Allan created a brilliant representation of a good friend. Couldn’t speak highly enough of the end product and delivery was very prompt.”
Consultant Caricature Gift!
This caricature was a birthday gift for an A&E consultant in Kerry’s University Hospital from his team. Many of the team were also leaving around the same time so it was partially a going away present too! It features an old style defibrillator and references his wearing of colourful socks, his love of swimming, and I’ve depicted a recent injury! He’s always in high demand in his department so I symbolised this with several arrows “pulling” him in different directions. The customer was good enough to send me a photo of the consultant with his team after the presentation of the caricature and they all look pretty happy with it!

Wedding Gift Caricature
This caricature was a wedding gift for a wedding last year and was put on display for the arrival of the bride and groom! The bride is wearing a Kerry jersey, and the groom has a Kerry bandana around his neck. It features signposts for Shrone, Killorglin and Dublin. Also included are the Sunday Times, a pilates mat, a GAA football and references to other sports including golf, rugby, badminton, tennis and hurling. And a cup of herbal tea! In the background is a vintage wedding car with cans on the back and the bride and groom’s initials on the number plate with a loveheart.
Weddings will be back in a big way later this year so if you’re going to one and you’re looking for a really special personalised wedding gift drop me a line!
I see Fungie the Dolphin’s back in the news (Prints Available)
Fungie, seen here in one of his other jobs, is lonely. Via Irish Examiner.
Fungie, one of Dingle’s most famous residents, is missing his friends.
With leisure tours banned due to Covid-19 restrictions, the Dingle dolphin is lonely for humans, and those closest to him are becoming increasingly worried.
Jimmy Flannery, a founding member of the fishermen’s group which set up the Fungie tours in 1989, said this is the longest time his “friend” has ever been without human interaction.
