The Newborn Identity by twisteddoodles: phenomenally prolific cartoonist and friend of Galway Cartoon Festival Maria Boyle, aka twisteddoodles, has written a book. She has somehow managed to write a book about rearing twins while simultaneously rearing twins. It’s a joyous and poignant reminiscence through Maria’s first year of motherhood, interspersed with her wry cartoon takes … Read more

The Impact of Children’s Exposure to Cartoons Promoting Healthy Eating

healthy eating cartoons celery

Interesting experiment published last year assessing the impact of cartoons on promoting healthy eating in kids:
“Children were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups: a comparison group was exposed to cartoons with no reference to food and an intervention group was exposed to cartoons with healthy eating messages. After viewing, each child was given the opportunity to eat for 10 minutes from a small selection of snack foods.

Children in the experimental group chose significantly more healthy food items than did those in the comparison group.”

I didn’t have access to the whole paper, just this abstract, but the conclusions are pretty clear. If you’re working in health promotion with kids, especially in promoting a healthy diet, get in touch with a cartoonist to help design your health promotion campaign! Science says so!
I have created many health promotion cartoons in Ireland over the years with the HSE and private organisations. I had a monthly cartoon strip in a newspaper published by the HSE with a positive health message. Issues covered included exercise for older people, breastfeeding, screentime for children, and healthy eating. Get in touch if you’ve a health promotion brief that requires an eye-catching visual element, or if you’d like to come up with original characters to impact the healthy eating choices of children. There are many ways this can be used to promote the healthy eating message, from comics and posters, to colouring pages featuring the characters and message. Wherever you are in the world I’ll be able to help you with your healthy eating or other campaign. Just get in touch, and once we have established a brief you will end up with a successful cartoon-based health promotion campaign!

Charlie Adley’s Double Vision – DID THE IRISH GIVE THE ENGLISH FOOTBALL?

john delaney fai vampire cartoon

John Delaney cartoon caricature from Charlie’s latest Double Vision column (printed in the Connacht Tribune and appearing online every week illustrated by me!)

It’d be crass and unprofessional of me to complain how for years I’d felt like having a shower each time I watched Delaney being interviewed on TV. The man always looked pure slimy, but that’s personal, unnecessary and hey, I don’t care.

I don’t know much about football but I know that if you throw a stick at Irish public life you’re going to hit some dodgy dealings. from the charity sector to sports, we never seem to learn anything about governance and good practice until someone is caught in the sweetie jar, and then they are just quietly moved on (usually), the story blows over and everything goes back to “normal” until the whole cycle repeats itself. It’s a hell of a way to run things. We seem to kowtow to strong personalities who then get to run things as a personal fiefdom, usually at the expense of people for whom funding was intended. It’s a sickness in Irish life that I don’t know will ever be addressed, because if everyone’s looking at this scandal this week, it takes the heat off that scandal over there for now. Ireland is run like a used car business in the 70s. Keep the polish high, it doesn’t matter that the engine is a trip around the corner from seizing completely, just take the money and get them to drive away.

The repercussions for John Delaney initially were to be moved sideways. Someone in a similar position looking on is just going to shrug their shoulders and carry on because what’s the disincentive? A finger wagging from a Dáil committee where you can just refuse to answer questions? There’s something wrong in the roots, there’s something wrong in the branches. We’ll just sit in our nests and pretend the tree won’t someday collapse.
